Century Built

2004-2015

A careful and economical restoration of an early postwar modern house built in 1950. This all-masonry “Century-Built Home” designed by Allen Williams was listed as Houston’s first modern protected landmark in 2006. It is also a Texas Recorded Historic Landmark and on the National Register. This project has been published multiple times and was featured on the Rice Design Alliance annual house tour in 2005.

In 2015 extra space behind the original house was used for a new studio outbuilding. Massing relates to the existing garage and other informal outbuildings in the neighborhood. Economy dictated the use of a pier-and-beam foundation with shallow footings and composition shingle siding. This was a design-build project. It won a preservation award from Houston Mod in 2017.
