halfway House

2022

Half a home still a lot. We borrowed part of the iconic housey-house street elevation of Robert Venturi’s Mother’s House (1964). Since the house only takes half the lot to allow for a large side garden, it seemed appropriate not to complete the front facing gable. We borrowed the the open, semi-courtyard plan from Elissa and Alvar Aalto’s Experimental House (1954). The long, north-facing garden elevation was organized with tiered rows of windows that recall, perhaps very stealthily Queen Hatshepsut’s splendid funeral chapel (15th Century BCE). This home is a perfect example of how we work to design and create beautiful and unique homes in the Houston Heights.
